Approach

Hair restoration focuses on re-establishing a natural looking hairline and improving overall hair density. Dr. Paul recognizes that each gender has a separate pattern of hair loss which is influenced by life events and genetics.  By reviewing photos from your youth, Dr. Paul understands what your hair line was and could be. Dr. Paul performs personalized hair restoration that is easy to maintain and compliments the face in a natural, age-appropriate way.

The Treatment Ladder

The treatment of hair loss can be approached from many directions. Often combination treatment is more powerful then any single treatment.  Dr. Paul is versed in all aspects of hair restoration.

At your consultation, Dr. Paul will review your relevant medical history to see if there is an underlying cause other than familial hair loss that can be reversed.  Dr. Paul is an expert at helping patients who have had hair loss from hormonal imbalance or chemotherapy.

Dr. Paul will provide recommendations on non-surgical options for care such as vitamins, topical treatments, oral medications, and light therapy.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP):

For patients with active hair loss, Dr. Paul has seen excellent results with PRP, known as “platelet rich plasma”.  In a single visit, your blood is drawn then centrifuged. Platelets in your plasma are extracted.  Platelets are cells rich with growth factors. Dr. Paul isolates and concentrates your own growth factors then uses them through microinjection to stimulate hair growth from the follicle.  PRP is exceedingly safe since the PRP comes from your own blood. The procedure takes about 45 minutes. Local anesthesia is given so it is painless. Often, the procedure is repeated 3 times every 6-8 weeks, then given every 6 months as a maintenance. The results from PRP last 4-6 months, though may last longer or shorter in any given individual.

To watch the journey of one of Dr. Paul’s patients who received PRP over 6 months – click here (video length 35 seconds).  For this patient, 3 treatments of PRP were given at time 0, 2 months, and 4 months.  Her results at the start, at 2 months, at 4 months, and at 6 months are shown below.

PRP PROGRESSION

The following female had 3 PRP treatments for hair loss.  The patient had hair loss for over a year following chemotherapy without improvement with minoxidil for many months prior to the initiation of PRP. Interestingly, the patient dyes her hair darker during treatment. Darker hair reveals the scalp and can make hair loss appear more severe; however, this patient shows improvement despite a darker shade of hair.

PRP over 4 months

PRP works for both men and women.  The following patient is a male who tried topical rogaine for months with little success. The patient noticed shedding and miniturization of the hair follicles. The following photos show the patient before PRP and two months after his first treatment.   The patient noticed his hair diameter increased, his shedding decreased, and he even noticed new hair growth

Hair Transplant:

For patients with active, focal, or established hair loss, hair transplant is a definitive technique.  Hair transplant techniques has improved remarkably over the past decade. Embracing these advancements, Dr. Paul provides patients two different surgical restoration options to meet individual hair expectations and long-term goals. The most common options, Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transfer (FUT), differ on how the donor hair is gather but provide equally aesthetic beautiful outcomes. With FUE, hair follicles are transferred individually, from the back to the scalp, where the hair grows throughout life and is less sensitive to hormones. With FUT, a “donor strip” is collected from the back of the scalp and individual follicles of hair are dissected after the strip is removed. Each technique has specific advantages and Dr. Paul will help you decide the best option during your consultation if you are a candidate for hair restoration surgery.

The following patients had hair transplant.  All are delighted with the growth from a single session.

Female Hair Transplant:

Females rarely lose their hairline.  Rather, females experience diffuse thinning on the top of the head. Many females seek a maintenance free approach to hair restoration. A transplant is an excellent maintenance free approach to improve density.

The following before-and-after image shows two females – each only 4 months after hair transplant:

Transplanting Hairs to the Eyebrows, Beard/Goatee, Chest, Arms, and Body:

Dr. Paul is able to successfully transplant hairs in a natural pattern all over the body. Because Dr. Paul can control the angulation that the transplanted hair exits the skin, the results look natural. The following patient had eyebrow transplant and is just 3 months post-op in the following before-and-after photograph:
