The Basics

What is Buccal Fat Removal?

The buccal fat pads are deep fat in the cheeks. They are located below the cheek bone. An experienced surgeon with a keen eye for symmetry, Dr. Paul performs beautiful and natural-looking cheek enhancement by reducing the buccal fat pads improving facial proportion and harmony.

Buccal Fat Removal Timeline

  • CONSULTATION (PRIOR TO SURGERY)

Dr. Paul will examine your cheeks and determine the best techniques for you.  Not every patient has full cheeks because of excess buccal fat pads, so Dr. Paul will evaluate all neighboring structures. He will discuss the plan and future if you so choose to have a buccal fat pad reduction.  If you agree with the techniques and results that are discussed, our Patient Coordinator will help you schedule your surgical date. You will be provided with instructions on how to prepare for your surgery and how you can make it as successful as possible.

    1st Visit
  • DAY OF SURGERY

Buccal Fat Removal surgery can be performed either under local or general anesthesia, so you will be able to return home once released. Dr. Paul will make a very small incision inside the cheek and gently “tease” the fat out to remove it. When finished, he will use dissolvable sutures to close the incision(s).

  • DAYS FOLLOWING SURGERY

Swelling and discomfort are at their peak in the first 3 days after surgery. Be reassured that you will have some prescribed medications and can use ice packs to help ease your recovery. You should stick to soft foods for the time being and follow up with Dr. Paul on your recovery progress.

    (DAYS 1-3)
  • Weeks Following Surgery

We will ask for you to follow up with us at 1 week after your procedure. You may be able to return to light activities and desk-based work at this point, but make sure to get plenty of rest and avoid too much activity.

    (WEEK 1)
  • WEEKS FOLLOWING SURGERY

You can return to your regular schedule and eating habits at this point, but check in with Dr. Paul before returning to your exercise regimen. You will still have residual swelling which can take several months to fully subside and allow for your new contours to settle in.

    (WEEKS 2-3)
  • FINAL RESULTS

Now that all the swelling has subsided and your cheeks healed, you will be able to enjoy a slimmer and more defined face. You will be able to enjoy your Buccal Fat Removal results forever – the fat pads do not grow back.

What’s The First Step?

If you feel that a New York City Buccal Fat Removal is the best solution for your needs, your first step should be to contact the office of Dr. Benjamin Paul and schedule your consultation with him. When you come in, you will be able to ask any questions about the procedure, have your face evaluated, discuss the different options available, and answer some of the questions about your medical history. We encourage you to be honest and open with Dr. Paul when having this conversation. Any information you provide will be used to prevent unnecessary risks and help you achieve the most optimal results.

Once you and Dr. Paul have discussed and agreed upon every aspect of your surgery, he will create your surgical plan. With this, our Patient Coordinator will help you schedule your procedure for a time that provides you with a few days of recovery following surgery. You will also be provided with some instructions to help alleviate and expedite your recovery.

What to Expect on the Day of Buccal Fat Removal Surgery

On the day of your Buccal Fat Removal Surgery in New York City, it will be performed either under local or general anesthesia, depending on your personal preferences and whether you are combining it with other procedures. You may also be provided with some pain and anxiety medication pills to help you relax.

Once the two of you are ready, Dr. Paul will inject a small numbing solution on the inside of each cheek. Although it is a very quick interaction, there may be a burning sensation, but from that point on, your entire cheek will be numb.

Next, your mouth will be propped open at a comfortable level, with your cheek being gently pulled back. Dr. Paul will make a very small incision inside the cheek to identify the buccal fat pad. The fat is then gently teased out of its pocket and removed. A few dissolvable stitches are placed to close the incision and the procedure is done.

The entire surgery should take under one hour and results become evident after one to four months as the swelling subsides and the buccal space contracts.

Buccal Fat Removal Recovery

Once you are released from our care to return home, your recovery should be relatively easy, requiring only about one to two days. Some patients experience mild pain/soreness, but this will subside after a few days.

Your cheeks will appear slightly fuller during the first week but tend to return to their normal appearance after about seven days. Unfortunately, the results are not immediately evident as the swelling takes the place of the fat that was removed, and will continue to subside for about many weeks post-surgery, only to improve over the next several months.

During recovery, it’s important to be careful not to bite down on the cheek area, so the incision can properly heal and sutures can dissolve. Pain medication can be prescribed and ice packs will help with swelling and discomfort.

Combine Your Buccal Fat Removal

If you’re looking to reduce the fullness of your cheeks, you may find yourself looking to enhance other aspects of your facial features. Dr. Paul is eager to discuss your best options to meet your aesthetic goals.
