Facial Trauma Surgery

Dr. Paul prides himself on delivering natural, long-lasting results with minimal down time.

Your face is your first impression. It is only natural to be sensitive and particular about your facial presentation. This is why facial trauma, whether from a motor vehicle accident, assault (including gunshots), sports injuries, falls, chemical exposures, thermal burns, or animal bites, can not only cause pain, loss of function, or a disfigured appearance, but it can also cause emotional and psychological harm. Many patients with facial trauma can also suffer from depression.

With Facial Trauma Surgery in New York City, Dr. Ben Paul can improve this disfigurement through facial reconstruction, restoring patients’ outlook by returning their facial features to as close to their original state as possible. His artistic eye and surgical skill allow his patients to look in the mirror to find renewed outlook and hope instead of a constant reminder of their accident.

The Basics

What is Facial Trauma Surgery?

Facial trauma surgery is an operative procedure that aims to reconstruct facial features harmed by trauma. Since the human face is a delicate area containing many bones, blood vessels, nerves, muscles, and sensory organs, if untreated, facial trauma may cause a permanent loss of function and disfigurement.

Dr. Benjamin Paul has extensive training in facial trauma surgery. He is well-versed in the repair of lacerations (known as cuts) as well as broken nasal bones (fractures). The goal of laceration repair and scar revision surgery is to minimize the scar, so that it is more consistent with a patient’s surrounding skin tone and texture while preserving or improving tissue function. As a result, Dr. Ben Paul’s patients often witness astoundingly positive results, making their facial damage from trauma practically invisible.

LACERATION REPAIR AND SCAR CORRECTION – Scar correction treatment options vary greatly on the type, degree, and placement of the scar. In most cases, Dr. Paul carefully changes the direction of the scar by following the natural tension lines within the skin.

NASAL FRACTURE REPAIR – Dr. Paul has expertise in resetting and fixing Nasal Bone Fractures.

Facial Trauma Timeline

Dr. Paul will evaluate your injuries, aesthetic and functional goals, and evaluate your unique facial structure and features. He will also evaluate your scars, bone, and soft tissue injuries to restore both function and appearance. After your surgical plan is made, our Patient Coordinator will help you schedule your procedure.  For some patients, we will proceed with treatment on the same day of the consultation. This is common for an acutely broken nose or open laceration if the repair can be completed with local anesthesia.

    1st Visit

The procedure required for facial trauma surgery depends entirely on your injury and its severity. Dr. Paul will finish your surgery and you will have the treated area bandaged up. Once you are released, you will be able to return home and rest comfortably.

    2nd Visit

There will be some pain, tightness, and swelling, as well as some mild bruising and numbness. You will need to rest during this time and avoid any strenuous activities. Depending on what type of procedure you had, you may also need to sleep with your head elevated.

    DAYS 1-7

Dr. Paul will have you come back for a follow-up so that he can observe your healing process. The swelling should continue to subside, but will still be prominent, especially in patients who have had more extensive work done.

    WEEKS 2-4

You should still be taking it easy during the first few months, but you should be able to slowly return to lighter activities. Most patients feel comfortable enough to return to work around this time. You can expect several more follow-ups with Dr. Paul during this time so that he can ensure your recovery is going well.

    MONTHS 1-6

Depending on the level of trauma that was repaired, your full recovery could take up to a year or more. Once fully healed, if you would like to have additional cosmetic surgeries performed to achieve the best aesthetic results, Dr. Paul would be happy to talk about your options.

What’s The First Step?

If you have an acute cut (also called a laceration) or fracture (if you break a bone) or any acute injury, please CALL our office. Even after hours, this is the most direct way to get care. If you cannot reach someone, please go to the emergency room or call 911.

The first step in getting a repair for your facial trauma in New York City with Dr. Ben Paul is to schedule a consultation at our clinic. On the day of your appointment, Dr. Paul will evaluate your injuries, unique needs, aesthetic and functional goals, and evaluate your unique facial structure and features. He will evaluate scars, as well as bone and soft tissue injuries, and he strives to restore both function and appearance. Furthermore, he will review your medical history to ensure you qualify for facial trauma surgery.

If you are deemed a good candidate for facial trauma surgery, Dr. Ben Paul will discuss what it involves, the pros and cons of the latest surgical techniques available, and what type of procedure would be best for you. He will also show you where the various incisions will be placed and what you can expect from post-operative healing.

Once you and Dr. Paul are satisfied with the direction of your procedure, he will create your custom surgical plan. Our Patient Coordinator will help schedule your surgical date and provide you with detailed instructions on how to prepare for your surgery.

What to Expect on the Day of Facial Trauma Surgery

On the day of your procedure, you may require local and/or general anesthesia to be administered for your comfort and pain management.

The procedure required for facial trauma surgery depends entirely on the injury and its severity. For instance, if you have a broken nose, the break in the bone needs to be reduced before the bones set. And then, at a later date, if desired, a rhinoplasty or “nose job” can be done to restore a more normal look to the nose and restore breathing.

For deep cuts or other soft tissue injuries, usually closure happens as soon as possible to reduce the change of infection or poor healing.

Facial Trauma Surgery Recovery

Recovery for every patient depends upon your condition including various factors such as the severity of your injury, the target area, and depth. We will provide you with full post-operative instructions, including how long you must take off from work and when you can exercise safely again.

Post-surgery, you will be monitored in a recovery room until Dr. Paul decides that you are safe to be discharged. You will need a family member or friend available to drive you home in case you are still feeling some of the effects of sedation.

You may go home on the same day as your surgery. Or you may need to stay in the hospital overnight if the procedure is extensive and more complicated. If you have other injuries, you may need to stay in the hospital longer. How long it takes to heal will depend on what type of injury you have.

After all surgeries, there is some pain, tightness, and swelling, with some patients also experiencing mild bruising and numbness. These symptoms are to be expected.  You can take pain medication to ease your discomfort as you heal. Sleeping upright or on your back with your head elevated for a couple of weeks will help to keep swelling to a minimum. We will give you instructions for showering, washing your hair, and using hair products/appliances.

Also please remember that numbness and swelling take time to recede and often are the last symptoms to resolve. It will take a few weeks and possibly months for you to see the final results of your surgery. Your scars will evolve and mature for a full year from the time of your surgery. There are many times that we will work with your dermatologist to help assist in scar prevention and to accelerate healing with creams, salves and lasers.
